During my senior year, I sat down and recorded goals for my life: a good job, that would leave time for my family; a nice home in a good neighborhood; good children who would follow in the footsteps of their parents; a wife who would be God loving, prayerful, creative, enthusiastic, loving, cheerful, intelligent, thoughtful, clean, active, and a good mother, homemaker, and Mormon (no pressure, but Denise delivered on every point).
My sweet wife, Denise and I have been married for 35+ years. We have spent a good portion of our married lives serving in youth programs. I have participated in at least 25 full-week summer camps (LDS encampments, scout camps, high adventures, Philmont training). I feel that my most significant accomplishments have been centered on service to others, something I learned from my Mother and Father. I still would like to serve a mission with my wife, once we retire.
When I sat down to record goals, I also listed 14 attributes I wanted to develop, including the attribute of love. From the pen of a 17-year-old: 1. Radiate your love for others 2. Talk only of other's good traits 3. Be friendly, smile 4. Don't be phony, let God's love emanate 5. Criticize only constructively 6. Want success for all, respect potential 7. Be a listener, learn others needs and help 8. Love thy neighbor as thyself, respect all
If I were to impart wisdom I have learned during my life, it is simply that we are happiest when we serve others. It give our lives purpose. And we can make a difference in the lives of others, when we truly love.
I look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.
